China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) discovered a natural gas field in Southwest China's Chongqing, with more than 120 billion cubic meters of gas reserves, which is said to be the largest natural gas field in Asia, according to a report from the Chengdu Commercial News Monday, citing an unnamed official from the Chongqing government.
According to the report, the government official said that it was a Sinopec executive who claimed the newly-found gas field as Asia's largest, which was discovered when Sinopec was exploring an area of 340 square kilometers.
When contacted by Bloomberg, Sinopec said that the company is checking the authenticity of the claim.
The three largest gas fields in China are the Sulige gas field, Puguang field and Dazhou field.
The Sulige gas field, in Erdos City in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is the country's largest gas field with proven gas reserves of 533.6 billion cubic meters. Large-scale exploration of this gas field began in 1999.
Puguang field, situated in Xuanhan county in Sichuan Province is the second-largest gas field with verified reserves of 356.07 billion cubic meters.
Dazhou field, also in Sichuan, is the third-largest natural gas field in China.
