Sri Lankan gov't to encourage local food production

The Sri Lankan government declared a National Food Week aimed to encourage local food production and food consumer, the government officials said on Monday.

Officials from the Department of Government Information said the National Food Week from June 22 to 28 was launched at the central city of Kandy, about 110 km from the capital Colombo Monday morning.

Under the theme "Let Us Encourage Local Food Production and Food Consumer", the program is aimed at encouraging local people to cultivate and face the world's food crisis, officials said.

The prevailing increase in hunger in the country was not only the result of poor global harvests, but also the result of the world economic crisis that has resulted in lower incomes and increased unemployment, officials said.
