Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia has launched two new routes from east Malaysia to Singapore, local media reported on Monday.

According to TV broadcaster Channel NewsAsia, the carrier will fly from Malaysia's Miri and Tawau to Singapore, making it the first and only budget carrier to fly these sectors. The new routes will start on September 9.

The airline said the new routes will benefit business and leisure travelers, while increasing traffic, tourism and trade, particularly in east Malaysia.

AirAsia will offer promotional all-in fares starting at 32 Singapore dollars (about 22 US dollars) for the Singapore-Miri route, and 42 Singapore dollars (about 29 US dollars) for the Singapore-Tawau route.

In March 2009, when overall traffic at Singapore's Changi Airport fell 11 percent, the number of passengers at the Changi Airport Budget Terminal grew 24.4 percent to more than 195,000.

Following a recent round of Singapore-Malaysia air talks, both countries have agreed to open six new destinations for air travel, including Malacca, Ipoh and Kuantan.
