Chile, EU discuss creation of fishing organization

Representatives from Chile and the European Union on Monday discussed the creation of a regional fishing administration in the South Pacific, the Chilean government said.

The meeting was hosted by Chilean Vice Foreign Minister Alberto Van Klaveren, Vice Fishing Minister Jorge Chocair, and Joe Berg, the EU fisheries commissioner.

Chilean offcials expressed interest in holding negotiations on fishing at a meeting in Auckland, New Zealand in November within a framework of the proposed Regional Organization of Fishing Administration.

During Monday's discussion, the Chilean representatives also proposed a new temporary measure for pelagic fishing.
