The government wants Poland to be ready for joining the European exchange rate mechanism (ERM-2) as soon as possible, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Friday.
Poland's euro adoption in 2012 depends on whether Poland can keep to the Maastricht criteria. "My government is doing everything to make Poland keep its public debt and deficit in check. But the ongoing crisis does not make this easy for us," Tusk was quoted as saying by Polish news agency PAP.
"I still believe that Poland should join the euro zone as soon as possible. But my government will not take any risky decision as it will have a decisive influence on the life of all Poles," the prime minister stressed.
"If together with the finance minister, we come to the conclusion that entering ERM2 can be risky for Poles, we will not force this decision. But we want to be ready for such possibility, " Tusk said.
