London stock market closes higher

The London stock market continued to add to recent gains on Tuesday, with the FTSE 100 index up 37.6 points, or 0.9 percent, at 4,481.2 points.

Supermarket Morrisons' shares jumped 8.2 percent after the retailer said its annual profits should beat expectations because of strong second-quarter sales volumes.

Friends Provident fell 2.5 percent after it snubbed a further takeover approach from investment firm Resolution.

Shares of Next fell 1.6 percent despite the fashion retailer raising its profit after sunny weather lifted sales.
