Vehicle sales down 4.9% in Brazil

Despite tax cuts granted by the government, vehicle sales in Brazil slipped in July, the National Motor Vehicle
Distribution Federation (Fenabrave) said Monday.
According to the Fenabrave, vehicle sales in Brazil totaled 285,416 units in July, down 4.9 percent from June and down 0.9 percent year-on-year. Sales of flexible-fuel cars and light vehicles totaled 243,406 units, down 6.4 percent from June.
In the first seven months of this year, the Brazilian auto industry produced 1,752,817 vehicles, down 12.9 percent from the same period last year. In July alone, a total of 281,626 units of vehicles were produced, down 0.9 percent from June and down 11.5 percent year-on-year.
Vehicle exports totaled 36,813 units in July, down 6.5 percent from June and 41.9 percent from July 2008. Income from vehicle exports totaled 618.3 million US dollars, down 3.2 percent from June and 50.1 percent from the same period in 2008.
Although vehicle sales declined in July, a total of 1,735,203 vehicles were sold in the country in the first seven months of this year, up 2.4 percent from the same period last year.
