Integration with the euro zone should be the strategic goal of the Polish economy, Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski told a news conference here Wednesday.
President of the European Central Bank Jean-Claude Trichet oncesaid that Polish economy resistance to crisis surprised a number of Poland's partners and dispelled doubts related to the fulfillment of Maastricht criteria, according to the minister.
"We have the intention to meet said criteria and we will continue to do it," Polish news agency PAP quoted Rostowski as saying.
He explained that crisis was a test for Poland's economy. It is impossible for a country to keep its own currency in the world of free flow of capital for a long- and medium-term, the finance minister said.
In July Deputy finance minister Ludwik Kotecki said that Polandwould not join the euro zone in 2012, as had been announced earlier.
At present Poland meets only the criterion of interest rates included in the Maastricht treaty. According to Kotecki, the fulfillment of the inflation criterion is feasible at the turn of 2010 and 2011 and the fiscal criterion may be fulfilled in 2012.
