Microsoft Corp. announced 800 more layoffs Wednesday in addition to the initial target of 5,000 the company declared in January.

"The total number of the broad cutbacks, the first major layoffs in the company's history, will be 5,800, " said Microsoft spokesman Lou Gellos. The cuts will spread across multiple businesses and positions in different areas.

The most recent cuts are expected to bring to a close the first major round of layoffs in the company's 34-year history. After the cuts are made, around 6.3 percent of the company's about 91,000 headcount will have been eliminated in total, up from the previous forecast of 5.5 percent.

Microsoft said that the cuts program was designed to bring costs in line with a worsening economy and was expected to save Microsoft $1.5 billion a year.

According to a report on the Seattle Times website, Gellos didn't rule out additional cuts ahead as the world's largest software company continually adjusts its business.
