Russia, Turkmenistan to resume gas supplies

Turkmenistan and Russia Tuesday agreed to resume Turkmen gas supplies to Russia after an eight-month interruption that raised questions about Moscow's sway in the country.

A pipeline rupture in April abruptly decreased Turkmen natural gas supplies to Russia, slashing its income from gas exports.

But on his second visit to Turkmenistan since September, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that the year was now ending on a "high note" with the new gas agreement.

Russian gas giant Gazprom said the supplies are planned to resume "from January 1, 2010 but no later than January 10," adding that it would now buy up to 30 billion cubic meters of gas a year from the energy-rich central Asian nation.
